Accessibility statement
Mathematics should be learnable by everyone. This page explains what we have done and where we fall short.
Honest status
We design towards WCAG 2.2 level AA, but the site has not been independently audited and we do not claim conformance or certification. [OWNER TO COMPLETE: after a manual audit, state the date, method and result here]
What is built in
- Keyboard: every control, including each of the 52 cards, is a real button reachable with Tab and activated with Enter or Space. A “Skip to main content” link is the first focus stop. Focus is shown with a high-contrast outline.
- Screen readers: landmarks (header, nav, main, footer), one h1 per page, labelled form fields,
aria-pressedon card toggles, spoken card names such as “Queen of hearts”, and live-region announcements when simulations start and finish or input is invalid. - Charts have text equivalents: each chart is accompanied by a data table containing the same numbers. Colours are never the only signal; legends and labels are provided.
- Colour and contrast: the dark theme was chosen with high-contrast text; card suits are identified by symbol and by name, not colour alone.
- Motion: chart animations and transitions switch off when your system requests reduced motion.
- Responsive layout: the layout reflows from phone to desktop and works with browser zoom up to 200%.
- No time limits, flashing or auto-playing media.
Known limitations
- Charts are drawn with an SVG library; while each has a table alternative, chart elements themselves offer limited screen-reader navigation.
- Mathematical formulas are written in plain text rather than MathML.
- The site is currently available only in English.
- The site has only been tested by its authors with a limited set of browsers and assistive technologies.
Report a barrier
If something does not work for you, please tell us via the contact page, including the page, your browser and any assistive technology. We will try to fix real barriers promptly.
